Narcissism is both a psychological and a cultural
phenomenon. It involves a preoccupation with images and roles
based on the denial of feeling, and it emphasizes self-aggrandizement
at the expense of respect for others. Since the narcissist is out
of touch with his true feelings, he is inevitably plagued by an
underlying sense of meaninglessness and frustration. Because he
is hung up on his self-image, he has difficulties in personal
relationships where empathy and intimacy are involved. Overcoming
the problem of narcissism requires going beneath the façade of
special status and entitlement and restoring the feeling life of the
body. Doing so represents a challenge, but it is the healthy
challenge of genuine growth and creative development in the face of a
destructive culture.
The lecture will be informal, with ample opportunity for
questions. Some basic bioenergetic exercises will be
demonstrated, with an opportunity for participation by volunteers.
